Guide to How to Measure Your Windows for House Window Tint Quotation NZ

1. Measure the Visible Glass Area Only
When measuring, focus only on the visible glass, not the frame.
Width (left to right):
Measure the glass edge-to-edge inside the frame. If the window looks uneven, measure:
- Top
- Middle
- Bottom
Use the widest measurement.
Height (top to bottom):
Do the same — measure:
- Left
- Centre
- Right
Use the tallest measurement.
2. Add a 10mm Buffer (Installer Allowance)
For installer trimming and perfect edge coverage, it’s recommended to add +10mm to both width and height.
Example from the guide:
- Actual glass size: 1280mm × 900mm
- Measurement to record: 1290mm × 910mm
This ensures the film has enough allowance for clean, tidy edges during installation.
3. Label Each Window Clearly
To help the installer (and yourself), label each measurement, such as:
- Bedroom
- Living Room
- Kitchen Window
- Sliding Door (Upper Pane)
Take photos and write measurements on them — it makes quoting extremely fast and reduces errors.
If the windows is above 2 M height, then please note it down too of how high it is to reach the top end of the windows
4. Doing Some Maths
Step 1: Converting millimeters or centimeters to meters
We are nearly toward the finish line! I do know everyone do not like this section 😅 but it has to be done! If your measurement is in mm or cm then it needs to be convert to meters. We have a calculator to assists you with the calculation of area! This works for both centimeter (cm) or millimeter (mm).
Step 2: Repeat for every pane
If a window has multiple sections (e.g., a sliding door or a 3-panel window), calculate each pane separately.
Example:
- Panel 1: 1.93 m²
- Panel 2: 1.40 m²
- Panel 3: 0.85 m²
Step 3: Add them all together
Finally, add all pane areas: 1.93 + 1.40 + 0.85 = 4.18 m² total (OR you can use the calculator below to enter each glass square meter). This is the number you will enter into the calculator below.

FAQ:
How do I calculate the total m² for house window tinting?
To calculate your total square metres, measure the visible glass only (width × height), convert it to metres, then add all the windows together.
Example:
Glass 1: 1.43m × 1.37m = 1.96 m² & Glass 2: 0.9m x 1.2m = 1.08 m²

Your final quote may vary depending on:

– Type of window (sliders, ranch sliders, fixed panels)
– Film type (privacy, reflective, ceramic)
– Condition of your windows
For an exact quote, simply send us your measurements + photos. If needed, we will drop by as well!
Do I still need an onsite visit after getting the estimate?
Not always.
If your measurements and photos are accurate, HLWrap can often provide a final quote remotely.
We only need to do an onsite visit if:
– Your windows are very high or hard to access
– The home has unusual glazing
– You want to confirm film options in person
– You’re unsure about your measurements
For standard homes, sending measurements + 2–3 clear photos is usually enough for a final confirmed price.
